JoEllen Gilbert M.S., CCC/SLP is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist with over 30 years of experience working with adults with speech and language difficulty. She has a masters degree in speech and language pathology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and holds the certificate of clinical competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).
Ms. Gilbert has lived and worked in Jacksonville, FL for over 20 years.
Our Philosophy:
JoEllen Gilbert is a strong proponent of the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA). This therapy approach prioritizes the person with aphasia and their life goals. Within this therapy model, the client, their family, and the speech-language pathologist (SLP) work as a team to establish goals and achieve them. The underlying primary goals are: increased life participation, a return to activities and socialization, and improved quality of life.
We work closely with the client and their family, or care partner, to establish communication goals that are important to them and reflect their lifestyle and interests. We utilize evidence based therapy techniques and customize treatment tasks to the interests and needs of each client. Family and care partner education is also a key component of each therapy plan.
Our Process:
We offer a free virtual initial consultation that allows us to get acquainted, discuss the client's specific diagnosis and needs, and determine if our services will be a good fit. The next step would be to schedule a detailed evaluation to determine areas of strength and weakness and the specific type of speech and/or language disorder. Once the evaluation is completed, we then sit down with the client and their family member(s) to discuss the results and generate specific goals that are important to that client. The free consultation will take place over the phone or via Zoom, however, the evaluation and all subsequent therapy sessions will take place in the convenience of the client's home.
J. Gilbert Speech Therapy LLC does not accept insurance. This allows the client and therapist to better collaborate and select therapy frequency and session lengths that are flexible and best fit that individuals needs and schedule.
Our Areas of Specialty:
Having a stroke, brain injury, brain tumor, or other neurological disorder can be a devastating and life changing event. In addition to possible physical deficits, difficulty speaking, understanding others, reading, or writing often result.
Aphasia is the term given to these language deficits. Damage to the left side of the brain is the most common cause of aphasia.
Apraxia of speech can also result from damage to the brain. With apraxia, a person may have adequate muscle strength in their lips, tongue, and face, but struggle to coordinate and produce the sounds and words they want to say. Dysarthria occurs when the muscles of the lips, tongue, and/or face are weak or paralyzed due to neurological damage. This results in speech that is slurred and often difficult to understand. A person may struggle with one or a combination of these speech or language disorders following neurological damage.
At J. Gilbert Speech Therapy LLC we specialize in treating adults with these acquired speech, language, and communication problems.
